We all know cats like yarn, and recently the kittens were allowed into my work space. It took no time at all for one to dive into my stash and find something they liked. Here is Thufir running off with a skein of yarn.
So rather than deal with the disastrous results of a kitten playing with a skein of yarn, I decided to come up with a more durable and safe alternative.
Here we have an inexpensive 100% wool yarn that I know will felt and a mixed fiber yarn that has feltable yarn in it. Holding the two strands together, I knit a stockinette square.
I did a 3 needle bind of, but any method of sewing up the edges will do.
I didn't want the filling to come out of the holes during the wash, so I used an old stocking to hold the stuffing. I stretched the stocking over a cup to make stuffing it simpler.
I should be able to make several toys from this one stocking.
Sew up the sides.
This one went through a full cycle and the dryer. The novelty yarn didn't felt as well as I'd hoped, but we still end up with a pretty firm fabric.
Here is the skein Thufir stole next to the finished toy.
And here they are playing with the finished project.
